Exotic landscapes, story lines worthy of a soap opera, a witty narrator with a huge fan following, and adorable creatures you’ll want to take home. These are the elements that make an amazing family-friendly Disney film like Monkey Kingdom. Not to mention, parents, your kids will be learning and they won’t even realize it!
This post is part of a #MonkeyKingdomEvent series with Disney. I am receiving transportation and accommodations for this event in exchange for sharing my experience with our readers. All opinions are my own.
It’s a story of the Macaque monkeys of Castle Rock in Sri Lanka, centering mostly around Maya and her baby, Kip. Just as many species in the animal kingdom have a developed hierarchy, so do the stars of Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom. However, Maya and her little one are on the bottom rung of the ladder and in order to survive, and ensure the survival of her son, Maya must find her way to the top of the hierarchy.
Of course, what is the star of any movie without her supporting cast. You’ll meet the sisters, the leader, the love of Maya’s life and Kip’s father and a rival gang of monkeys that attempt to take over Castle Rock. It sounds like a friday episode of any great soap opera, but because it’s Disney, it’s a sweet and compelling story line with breathtaking cinematography.
The story is made better only with a little help from narration by the incomparable Tina Fey who brings humor when it’s appreciated and drama when it’s needed. During scarier parts (don’t worry, they’re mildly dramatic and not frightening for the kids), her voice is soothing enough to be reassuring.
Monkey Kingdom is a great film for the whole family and during it’s opening week in theaters, which is April 17-23, a portion of each ticket sold will be donated to Conservation International to help protect monkeys and other endangered species in their natural habitat.
