Mazda CX-9 Review: So Much Fun To Drive, You Won’t Realize There’s 3 Rows

One of the worst parts of my job is test driving cars; not the test drive itself, mind you, but having to give back the cars when we’re done. We’ve test driven vehicles that ranged from “Meh, it was alright” to “Why do I NOT own this car?” and despite our pleading with the manufacturers, we’ve yet to convince them to just overlook the fact that they’re at our house.

The new Mazda CX-9 was one of those cars.

The spaciousness of the Mazda CX-9 is evident in its styling, but can’t be detected when you’re driving it. It feels like you’re driving a mid-sized car, not a 3-row SUV.

It seats 7 people comfortable and has more legroom than most other vehicles in its class. Squeeze 7 people in the Mazda CX-9 and you’ll still have room for groceries or gear in the back, which is a huge sales point for me.

The CX-9 features a powerful 273-hp 3.7L V6 engine that achieves an EPA-estimated 24 MPG on the highway. Its competitors, the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and Acura MDX, get an estimated 27 MPG, 25 MPG, and 27 MPG respectively. So, while it’s not super impressive, it is somewhat competitive.

My kids love the sunroof. This is a must-have in any car we drive. I’m a huge fan because it makes the car feel less cramped, more spacious, although the CX-9 really didn’t need much help in this department. Even my Toyota-loyal husband was really impressed.

Safety features in the Mazda CX-9

Besides a huge dose of comfort, the Mazda CX-9 features a ton of safety features. Available Rear Cross Traffic Alert signals you if a vehicle approaches from the side when you’re backing out of a parking space or driveway. The available rearview camera and rear backup sensors (which are an awesome feature if you have kids!) help detect objects behind the car when it’s geared for reverse. Add to that blind-spot monitoring, Dynamic Stability Control, Traction Control and Roll Stability Control and you’ve really hit the jackpot in safety features!

While safety features are important to any safe driver or those with kids, you’ll be happy to learn that the Mazda CX-9 is more fun to drive than any other SUV we’ve driven.
