Not your traditional hotel, we stayed at the Anchor Inn Boutique Hotel at Put-in-Bay. If you’re looking for a quieter stay, this may be the place you’re looking for.
Put in Bay, located on South Bass Island in Lake Erie, has traditionally been a location for fun – bachelor and bachelorette parties, weekend-long birthday parties, or girls night out. Home to the world’s longest bar is an obvious place to play, but can it also be an ideal getaway for couples to find relaxation and romance in northwest Ohio?
My husband and I recently spent a weekend there and loved it as a couple’s getaway. One thing that made it feel more relaxing was opting to stay in the island’s premier boutique hotel instead of one of the island’s “party hotels.”
Why The Anchor Inn Is Different And Better
The Anchor Inn Boutique Hotel on South Bass Island is as picturesque as it looks, both inside and out, and it quickly became a favorite. The style more resembles a coastal cottage than it does a hotel and the owners seem to have put a lot of heart and soul into its design. It’s quiet and peaceful, but only steps away from the downtown area of Put in Bay so feel free to relax on their front patio then take a walk downtown for a few drinks at one of the many local bars.
We stayed in the spacious First Mate’s Room, one of 9 nautical themed rooms on-site. It’s a 3rd-floor luxury suite so it has convenient amenities and an awesome view of the island. Within the suite are a small kitchen, a private bath and balcony, a king-size Murphy bed and two additional sleeping cubbies that can sleep kids or adults comfortably. If you’re staying for longer than a weekend, there’s also access to a washer and dryer just down the hall. If your family is a bit bigger, there’s also a super-cute cottage on the grounds that sleeps up to 6 people.
Perks Of Staying At The Anchor Inn
The private balcony was a favorite spot of ours after a long day of island exploration. We’d visit Heineman’s Winery to grab a few bottles of their island-grown Sweet Concord and watch the golf cart traffic as island life calmed for the evening.
In the morning, we enjoyed the best breakfast spread we’d seen in a long time (and one you definitely won’t find at our house!). A variety of hot and cold goodies, a to-die-for quiche, biscuits and gravy, fresh fruit, bread, pastries, rolls… I’m getting hungry just thinking about it!
I don’t know which brand of coffee they prefer, but I will tell you that it was some of the most delicious coffee I’ve ever tasted.
From the little kitchen that has everything to the towel warmer and invigorating shower head in the bathroom, the First Mate’s Suite at The Anchor Inn was exactly what my husband and I needed for a relaxing island getaway without having to leave Ohio. Thank you so much to the owners and the staff at The Anchor Inn for making our stay feel cozy!
