Besides being hilariously awesome and enjoyably difficult, what I love about my kids is that they love to read. Even if your kids don’t love to read, you can make it enjoyable by reading with them or encouraging them to take part in a summer reading challenge!
This post is compensated as part of our partnership with Scholastic. All opinions are my own. Reading is important to my family and I!
Most of the time, having a preschooler and a teenager in the same household is quite difficult. We have to find activities that they both enjoy which is far more challenging than most people can imagine. One loves roller coasters, the other isn’t tall enough to ride. One likes to play dress up, the other would rather be all angsty and listen to music alone in his room.
One thing they can enjoy together is reading. My teen can read to my toddler and my toddler can practice reading with us, so we’re all reading together as a family. My goal for my kids this summer is to discover and read 10 new books, and they’ve plenty of time and desire to do so – they’re actually excited about this summer reading challenge!
We’re so thrilled that our family is part of the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, powered by Energizer®! The Challenge is a free online reading for children that will encourage them to read books all summer long. This not only provides families an opportunity to enjoy activities together, but your kids won’t fall behind in their reading and lose core skills.

Scholastic has always been synonymous with fun and reading, and it’s a familiar to your kids, so they’re more likely to participate in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. Online, they can log their reading minutes to unlock stories written by favorite children’s authors, as well as earn rewards, win prizes and even help set a reading world record for the summer! Scholastic’s reading goal for this year is to break last year’s reading world record of 304, 749, 681 minutes! That is a lot of reading.
The theme of this year’s reading challenge is “Power Up & Read,” encouraging kids to read all summer long. Seems appropriate since Scholastic has joined together with Energizer® to ‘power’ the Summer Reading Challenge. Parents can sign up kids beginning May 4, 2015 and the challenge runs through September 4, 2015.
Energizer and Scholastic have also partnered to create the “Power the Possibilities” campaign, giving moms the tools they need to unlock their child’s talents, fuel their ambitions help them succeed. Parents are encouraged to buy specially marked packs of Energizer® batteries for the chance to win the Energizer Instant Win Game! Prizes include a family trip to New York City, a Scholastic Study Corner Makeover, a tablet with Scholastic apps, a library of Scholastic books and more! Everyone who plays gets a free digital download, too.
