I am hosting a giveaway in partnership with Scholastic!
When I was 10-years-old, I was likely getting into a lot of trouble, spending time with my friends, and watching mindless television shows. If you’re 10-year-old Hilde Lysiak, however, you’d have written a book by now. This wonder didn’t stop there. She also publishes a local newspaper – the Orange Street News – and has been interviewed by The Today Show and by the Columbia Journalism Review. Not bad for someone so young.
HERO DOG! (Hilde Cracks the Case #1), is the first book in a new series from Scholastic Branches by 10-year-old real-life reporter Hilde Lysiak! Lysiak took her knowledge as a street-smart reporter and used those skills to write her first book for kids. My daughter, 7-years-old, is already reading chapter books and she was thrilled by this one.
Because it’s a Scholastic book, I knew that it would be one that my daughter would enjoy and I didn’t have to worry about whether the content was safe for her. This series is part of Scholastic’s early chapter book line Branches, aimed at newly independent readers. It features easy-to-read text, high-interest content, fast-paced plots, and illustrations on every page, these books will boost reading confidence and stamina.
“This mystery series is sure to win over readers diving into beginning chapter books. Like other titles in the ‘Branches’ line, pictures and text work together to tell the story. Fast-paced action helps maintain budding readers’ attention. Pages from Hilde’s notebook introduce new vocabulary and model questioning. The right amount of support and repetition is given for students transitioning into a more independent phase of reading, and many will find themselves working to solve the mystery alongside the protagonist. Teachers will appreciate using this series to teach questioning words…. VERDICT: A solid addition to most chapter book collections, especially where there are mystery fans.” — School Library Journal
There’s even an accompanying classroom guide for teachers or parents who homeschool that want to encourage kids to test out their reporter knowledge and practice writing their own headlines with Scholastic’s Guide to Growing Young Reporters”!
